Does Taylor Swift’s Success Mean You’re a Loser After 25?

So you’re over 25 and think you’re doing okay. Then, you look at the latest cover of TIME magazine and see superstar Taylor Swift, 24, at the top of the music industry.

She’s been working in it for 11 years already, and maybe you’ve just started a new job but still dream one day you’ll make the change to a totally different career that you know you’re just going to totally nail, that is, if you ever actually take the step and do it…

Taylor should be an inspiration to Gen Y, but does she just give you the feeling that you’re almost past your use by date, even before you’ve hit 30?

TIME says:

“As most millennials are moving sluggishly through their twenties, the hyper-visible hotshots are getting younger and younger, whittling away at the maximum age limit at which someone can get their “big break.””

What about Malala Yousafzai, who at 17 is the youngest Nobel Prize winner? Or Saira Blair, who at 18 is the youngest American lawmaker?

Perhaps we are simply setting our expectations too high and need to get back to the reality (and I definitely don’t mean the ‘reality’ we get on television) of my life compared to my life, that is how I am now compared to how I was before and how I want to be in the future.

Comparing myself against people in totally different circumstances, regardless of age, is a bit like gambling and getting depressed over not winning the lottery… again and again… despite the impossible odds.

Good for you, Taylor Swift. I’m happy for your success.

I hope you use it wisely and eventually show us that you can also be successful in your 30s and 40s, and prove that hitting 30 is really a beginning, not an ending to success for our generation.

What’s your opinion?
