Hong Kong’s Flower Show in March 2018 opened up to much fanfare and celebration as it honored the joy of blooming flowers. This annual show of oriental blossoms is always a success, as flowers are of great importance to the Chinese people.

Flowers in China are not just essential for their artistic value; they are just as important for their cultural symbolism and medicinal properties.

Here are six of the most significant oriental blossoms to the Chinese culture

1. Orchids

Orchids have great value in Feng Shui as they are considered to be the symbol of fertility. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the stems and bulbs of the orchids are used to make medicines to alleviate sleep disorders.

Apart from that, the orchid flower is one of the most exotic flowers in the world, and any floral arrangement with orchids is considered regal and grand. People in China also believe that the orchid symbolizes nobility, integrity, and friendship, making it a popular choice of flowers to gift to family and friends.

2. Lotus

The lotus in China symbolizes the holy seat of Buddha. The lotus also has a special place in China as it represents purity and elegance, even though it rises from the soil and muddy water.

In Chinese literature and art, the lotus is used to depict honor and longevity. The lotus flower has several medicinal properties. In TCM, it is used to treat bleeding, stress, and fevers.

Lotus seeds are edible and a great source of potassium and magnesium. Lotus seeds are good for treating ailments related to the heart and blood vessels.

3. Chrysanthemum

The chrysanthemum is one of the few flowers in which the white color is appreciated for its positivity. The white chrysanthemum in Chinese culture symbolizes nobility and grace.

The flowers are also considered to be bearers of good fortune and are often used for ceremonies and special occasions. In TCM, the flower is used for its soothing and cooling properties to treat irritated eyes, high blood pressure, and migraines.

Chrysanthemum tea is used to alleviate lung and breathing disorders, as well as to bring down internal body temperatures.

4. Hibiscus

The hibiscus in China represents fame and esteem. It is used to commemorate men and women for their success. Medicinally, the hibiscus has many benefits. It is full of antioxidants, which help reduce fevers, clear out the respiratory tract, and help alleviate asthma, bronchitis, and coughing.

The hibiscus is also used to treat hypertension, menstrual, and heart problems, as well as diabetes. Additionally, hibiscus can be used to reduce dandruff and hair fall.

5. Peony

Peonies symbolize a woman’s beauty and elegance, and they are also considered to honor spring, life, and reproduction. Peonies have been an integral part of the Chinese culture since the beginning, and are present in abundance in the Imperial Gardens.

In China, peonies are used to heal inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle cramps, and spasms. The flower is also used to treat hepatitis and it helps combat problems of cholesterol and diabetes.

6. Bauhinia

The bauhinia is special to Hong Kong as it is considered to be the best hybrid genus in the world.

This combination of its nature and vitality is used to represent Hong Kong making it their flower emblem. Hong Kong’s love for this flower and its cultural significance has even found a permanent place in their flag and currency.

It blooms most profusely in the winters, overcoming the harsh cold.
