Homeless Pups Buried Alive, Students Come to the Rescue

Sometimes life in school is easier than in the real world. This is true for homeless dogs in China; homeless dogs are a common scene at many universities and colleges in China.

Homeless dogs can find more food around the school cafeteria. And they face less harm from humans on campus, as students usually are friendly with homeless animals. Nonetheless, schools are not absolutely safe, and cruel things still happen to homeless dogs.

For the safety of students, security guards at most schools choose the most brutal and violent ways to deal with homeless dogs on campus. Many homeless dogs are beaten to death, or even buried alive after being caught by security guards.

Recently, a wave of killing homeless dogs swept over Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics. On September 22, female students heard a dog whining loudly when the girl and her friend walked out of the school building. They saw the security guards at school were laying out new turf. Remembering the recent case that homeless dogs were being buried alive in school, the girl and her friend soon realized what was happening.

After she confirmed this was the case with witnesses, the girl started digging.

“I was not sure whether I could save them or if it was already too late; I just thought the dogs were so pitiful, I wanna try to save them.”

More students started to join her rescue effort. Even though the school security guards were shouting at them and cursing, none of the students gave up.

Some students brought a spade, and most students dug with just their hands.

Finally, they saved seven puppies. One puppy was buried too deep, and couldn’t be saved.

Later, the students hid the mother dog and her puppies in a safe place. The university took harsh actions toward the homeless dogs because a few students were bitten by stray dogs, according to Nandu News. However, this doesn’t justify the actions of the security guards. One girl who saved the dogs said to reporters: “It’s not a problem that schools treat the stray dogs in a strict way, but it is a problem to treat them in such an inhumane way.”

Students suggested the school can send the dogs to the animal rescue station or ask people to adopt. Whether it is a stray dog or not, any life is worth respecting.
