The poor shark has a bad rapport as a mean killing machine, but the real culprit is an innocent-looking little device that you trust — your phone.
Turns out sharks have killed eight people this year, and taking a selfie has killed 12.
According to a BBC report the most recent death from a selfie was a Japanese tourist at the Taj Mahal. The report stated: “Eyewitness Sagar Singh told BBC Hindi that the tourist fell while taking a selfie at the Taj Mahal’s Royal Gate. Police said he lost consciousness immediately after the fall, and succumbed to head injuries in hospital.”
You can’t even use your selfie stick at Disney Theme parks, as they have been banned due to concerns to visitors safety. Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty said in a statement: “We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests, and cast.”
The majority of deaths from selfies have been from falling while taking the selfie, and the next leading cause is getting hit or injured by a train.
So next time you raise your phone for a selfie, make sure you aren’t in danger.
